The Bundle of Sticks

An old farmer teaches his bickering sons a powerful lesson on the strength of unity with a simple bundle of sticks.

Once upon a time…

There was an old farmer who had three sons. Now, these sons, well, they argued over everything! If one said the sky was blue, another would say it was purple, and the third would insist it was green! The farmer loved his sons dearly, but their constant bickering wore him down. “If only they could learn to get along,” he thought.

One day, after a particularly heated argument among the brothers over, of all things, who could carry the most firewood, the farmer decided it was time to teach them a lesson. He called them over and handed each of them a single stick.

“Go ahead,” he said with a knowing smile, “Snap it in half.”

Each son easily broke his stick with a quick snap. They looked at their father, unimpressed. “What’s the point of this, Father?” they asked, not seeing any lesson in a simple twig.

“Wait,” he said, holding up his hand. The farmer then took a bundle of sticks and tied them together with a piece of twine. He handed the bundle to his eldest son.

“Now,” he said, “try to break these sticks while they’re tied together.”

The eldest son grunted and strained, but he couldn’t break the bundle. Then, the second son took his turn, trying with all his might, but he couldn’t break it either. Finally, the youngest son gave it a go, but no matter how hard he tried, the bundle wouldn’t budge.

The farmer took back the bundle and looked at each of his sons. “Do you understand now?” he asked. “A single stick can be broken easily, but together, they’re unbreakable.”

The brothers exchanged glances, finally realizing what their father was trying to tell them.

“Just like these sticks,” the farmer continued, “if you stand alone, you’re weak and easily defeated. But if you stand together, no one can break you.”

From that day on, whenever the brothers felt the urge to argue or bicker, they remembered the lesson of the bundle of sticks. They learned that, as a family, they were much stronger when united than when they stood alone.

Moral of the Story

This story teaches that unity is strength. Just like the sticks in the bundle, people are stronger together than they are on their own.
